El Fayoum Oasis

What is EL Fayoum Oasis Egypt known for?

The Fayoum Oasis is one of the most well-known oasis areas in Egypt, and it is sometimes called “Faiyum Egypt.” You can learn about how important it has been for farming since ancient times by reading about Egypt Oases. The Coptic word “Peiom,” which means “sea,” is where the name “Fayoum” comes from.

West of the Nile Valley, in Fayoum, Egypt, where there was a depression in the desert, people made an oasis. Egypt is a great place to grow crops because the Joseph Canal connects the Fayoum to the Nile, and other channels branch off from the beginning of the Joseph Canal to the end of Faiyum.

The History of the Fayoum :

“Atef-Pehu,” which means “Northern Sycamore,” was the 21st nomo of Ancient Egypt and the first name in Upper Egypt. The capital of Fayoum was called “Shedyt” in Arabic and “Crocodileopolis” in Greek (after the god Sobek, the crocodile god). During Ptolemy II’s rule, this city was known as “Arsinoe.”

Because it had canals, the XII Middle Empire Dynasty of Egypt thought of it as the center of Egypt’s agriculture. It was built in Fayoum Oasis by the Theban pharaohs, but the Sultan of Saladin fixed it up because it was so important (the founder of the Saladin Citadel in Cairo).
